1% for the Planet is a global movement empowering companies to put their money where their mouth is. How? By supporting and amplifying a 1 percent donation of annual sales to environmental causes. Mananalu is proud to join this important movement, with our carbon and plastic offsets making up our 1% for the Planet.
What Exactly Is 1% for the Planet?
1% for the Planet is a global network of environmentally minded businesses, individuals, and nonprofits who have committed to donating at least 1 percent of their annual sales or salary to environmental causes. The idea is that because organizations profit off resources taken from the Earth, they should pay it forward through philanthropic giving that supports reputable environmental causes.
To qualify for membership, you must provide annual documentation of total gross sales (an important distinction from profits) and a proof of support to a verified nonprofit organization. In addition to validating donations and providing this coveted certification, 1% for the Planet also advises on giving strategies and helps to amplify the impact of its network. For example, members receive a 1% for the Planet logo, which can be leveraged on products and promotions to showcase the organization’s environmental commitment.
Today, 1% for the Planet is over 5,000 members strong, and we’re excited to be in the company of other impact-minded brands like Patagonia. Speaking of Patagonia, 1% for the Planet was originally started in 2002 by innovative Patagonia founder, Yvon Chouinard, along with the Blue Ribbon Flies founder, Craig Mathews.
Our 1% Commitment
As a member of 1% for the Planet, Mananalu is able to further support environmental causes by donating 1 percent of our annual sales to plastic and carbon offsets.
Our partnership with rePurpose Global is the cornerstone of our Drink One, Remove One promise. This means that whenever you drink a bottle of Mananalu, we donate a portion of that sale to rePurpose Global, who then remove the equivalent amount of plastic from the environment.
As mentioned earlier, 1% for the Planet was founded to help companies repay for the resources they’ve taken from the environment. In our case, that’s the Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions associated with running our business—from the production of the aluminum bottle all the way to delivering the water to your home. It’s for this exact reason that Mananalu funds five verified environmental projects to offset our annual carbon footprint, which in 2021 amounted to 568 tons of CO2. Through these offsets, we’ve also received our Climate Neutral Certification.
